The progressive decline of tragedy, as a literary genre, linked to the downfall of a philosophical framework of absolute values (both religious and not), activated a deep reflection about the origin and meaning of tragic. The collapse of the so-called “grande stile” produced expressive forms that rethought the agonistic tension, typical of the tragedy, towards an aesthetic of distance, away from the present, from Leopardi to Pasolini. The essay highlights how Saba's poetry has been reinterpreted by poets and storytellers of the late twentieth century also from a civil perspective, and has established itself as the object of a rethinking that involves the very function of literature as a (residual) ambition for truth and as disobedience in the face of the semantic seduction of the «sign language of the strongest» (to use Nietzsche's formula).

In the last decades, the notion of the landscape has been widely expanded. This has led to a meaningless position according to which landscape does not exist because it is everywhere. The essay attempts to balance the useful new amplified conception of landscape. The ideas of Gilles Clement, the fusion of architecture and landscape symptomatically achieved by Alvaro Siza's Leca swimming pools are considered. Finally, focus is given to modern so-called landscape urbanism.
